March 3, 2008
The Cypress Landing Environmental Committee met 3 March at the home of
Kay Graham.
After accepting the minutes of the February Meeting, Bob Wright
discussed the continuing litter collection efforts of the committee in
conjunction with a corps of concerned homeowner volunteers. He
remarked that the volume of trash volunteers have collected along the
roadsides of Old Blount’s Creek Road, Cypress Landing Parkway and
Cypress Landing Trail has diminished considerably over the last year.
Members in attendance felt that the volume of new home construction and
the proliferation of litter have a direct correlation. Whatever
the reason, the amount of trash discarded within the boundaries of the
landing is has lessened from over 20 bags to only 12.
Hank Capuano reported that aluminum can collections are progressing at a
steady pace. The collection receptacle numbers has been reduced to
two. Someone has commandeered the third unit; Hank will contact
the two local trash collection agencies, David’s and Pak R, and ask if
they might donate another one. As the summer approaches, the
number of aluminum cans will increase and the two existing receptacles
will prove to be inadequate to handle the amount of cans being recycled
on behalf of the Blind Center. If we are unable to convince
the trash companies to donate another can , we will purchase another one
outright.
A duplicate Wetlands trail sign has been ordered from Hudson Sign in
Chocowinity. There is already signage in place on Potomac, east of Rolf
and Judy Andersen’s home. It announces the Wetland trail and
advises of the need for appropriate clothing and vigilance with regard
to wild life. That might be encountered. The terminus lies
on Choptank behind Tom and Kay Grahams home; the new sign will be placed
here.
The ad hoc Tree management committee met last week and Mary Thomson
represented our organization.
A Request to install an Information box (mailbox) at the entrance to the
Walking Trail on Clubhouse Road Is being submitted to the ACC.
The box will hold information sheets expanding on horticultural
facts for all the native flora identified with Arboretum quality signs
throughout the trail.
Dan Bergbauer, vice chair of the B&G has floated an idea to construct a
Demonstration garden (25 by 50 feet) adjacent to the bay club, on
a piece of land that has had a long history of soil erosion. Vegetables,
shrubs, annuals, perennials, biennials, herbs, propagation and weed
identification raised beds are planned. This site
would be used for educational purposes for the entire community.
The board has asked for homeowners who have concerns to email Kay Graham
and Kay, in turn will send the concerns to the CAM. This site
should prove to be an excellent consciousness raising facility for
environmental issues as well.
The Next meeting is planned for 8 April, 7 pm. at the home of Kay
Graham.
Meeting adjourned.
